Who We Are
A ministry of personhood and presence
The Laurel Pregnancy Center first opened its doors to our community in 1987. A group of community leaders saw a need to help women navigate through the complexities of relationships, finances, and their future when faced with an unplanned pregnancy. Over the years, the Center has evolved to meet the needs of women and men in many more areas than just pregnancy. Our client base has also expanded far beyond the limits of Laurel, and we frequently support individuals from all over the state as well as the country over the phone.
Because our area and scope have expanded so greatly, we struggle with the center’s name feeling appropriate to the support we provide. We call ourselves “the LPC,” which we think could stand for “Listening People Who Care.” As the Center has evolved, we have become even more intentional about upholding the values and guiding principles of the organization. Staff and volunteers at the LPC share the same driving motivation for the work they do: to walk alongside people in times of need, showing them the same love and care that we have received from God. We feel called to serve in this way and take great pride in the support we provide.
We welcome you to read more about how we vet, background check, and train all employees and volunteers to ensure that our clients feel safe and secure. We spend time before and after client sessions in prayer, ensuring that we are communicating God’s love and grace. We strive for excellence, and to maintain our high standards, we have debriefs between Care Coaches and senior staff to review what went well and any sources of improvement. We stress humility and encourage one another to grow and learn from our clients and one another.
The LPC is truly a special place. We feel honored to listen to the experiences, fears, joys, and successes of our clients as we walk alongside them in whatever capacity they need.
As you can see in our Spiritual/Theological Foundations, the LPC’s mission is to glorify God and make the Gospel of Jesus known by caring for women and men as God intended, showing them the reality of Jesus through our actions and words, and respecting the innate, inborn value each person has as a creation of God. This respect for your personhood is why we approach clients with curiosity, humility, and empathy.
Our desire is to sit alongside you and help you process what is happening in this portion of your life story. This may involve walking you through the process of grief or healing, discovering the agency you have over your life and decisions, or simply realizing your worth and intrinsic value. You are unique, cherished, created, and loved by God. We want to show up for you as Jesus does: with empathy, understanding, curiosity, and calm.
Our Care Model emphasizes the continuation of care to support you through the journey you find yourself on, which we recognize as only one chapter of your unique life story. We recognize that some experiences are not timed or linear, which is why we will continue to follow up with you, listen to you, and pray for you for as long as 18 months if desired. We will be a safe place for you to process your thoughts and emotions and we can locate additional resources for you if needed.
